Car Accident during Liverpool Parade: Key Details as Individual is Detained

A 53-year-old British man was taken into custody Monday following a collision in Liverpool that left nearly 50 individuals injured after he drove his car into a crowd at a parade celebrated the city's football club's victory in the Premier League. According to official statements, the incident is not being investigated as an act of terrorism, as it appears the suspect acted alone.

Of the total injuries, 27 people were hospitalized across the city, with an adult and a child suffering serious injuries. An additional 20 individuals received treatment for their injuries on site, including four children, while a paramedic on a bike was struck but not severely hurt. Liverpool Mayor Steve Rotheram advised BBC that four individuals remain in critical condition in the hospital.

Merseyside Police revealed they received reports of a driver colliding with the parade around 6 p.m. local time Monday and subsequently detained the 53-year-old man from the Liverpool area in connection with the incident. During a press conference, police officials stated the incident was not being treated as a terrorist attack, as they believe this was an isolated incident and no other individuals are being sought in relation to it.

The Liverpool Football Club released a statement expressing their concern for those affected by the incident at their Premier League victory parade and offered their continued support. Videos circulating on social media showed a car driving through a group of people on Liverpool's Water Street, followed by the crowd surrounding and attempting to stop the vehicle.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the event as "appalling," praising first responders and expressing his concern for the injuries sustained, adding that he is closely following developments. The Liverpool City Council is currently cooperating with Merseyside Police following the incident. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper described the collision as "truly shocking and horrendous."

In support of Liverpool, other English football clubs and officials also issued statements. The English Premier League expressed its shock and offered its full support to Liverpool FC, while Manchester United and Everton FC conveyed their thoughts and sympathies to the city of Liverpool.

Eyewitness accounts provide additional details about the incident. Isle of Man resident Peter Jones, 44, who was walking up Water Street, heard a frantic beeping noise ahead and saw a car speed past him before people began chasing it and trying to stop the driver. Harry Rashid, another attendee, described the collision as occurring very quickly, with individuals being knocked off the car's hood.

Liverpool FC captured the Premier League title, ending Manchester City's four-year championship streak last month after their victory over Tottenham Hotspur. The team successfully lifted the trophy for the first time in front of a packed stadium on Sunday at Liverpool's Anfield stadium after their previous title win occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. The club's latest triumph is their 20th overall and second since the Premier League's inception in 1992.
