Captured Hamas prisoner expresses desire to resume military service
Edan Alexander, an Israeli-American soldier, has returned home after being held captive by Hamas for 584 days. The announcement was made at an event hosted by the private US organization FIDF in New York.
Alexander was abducted along with more than 250 other people during the attack by Hamas and extremists from the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023. His time as a hostage was marked by 'days of struggle, pain, and separation from his family.' He described his time in the tunnels under the coastal strip as 'the hardest days of my life.'
The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) was not involved in Alexander's release, according to the current information. Instead, it appears that the US played a key role. Former US President Donald Trump is believed to have been involved in efforts for Alexander's release. Trump instructed his Middle East envoy, who communicated with Hamas regarding the release of hostages, according to previous reports.
Hamas has claimed to have distributed hostages across several neighborhoods of the city of Gaza. It is assumed that around 20 hostages are still alive in the Gaza Strip. Alexander expressed concern for these remaining hostages in his speech.
In his speech, Alexander concluded with the phrase 'Until victory.' He also announced his intention to return to military service in Israel. The details of his return to active duty have not been disclosed at this time.
FIDF is an organization that supports Israeli soldiers. Their support likely played a role in Alexander's recovery and return home. The organization has not released a public statement regarding Alexander's release.
This development comes as Hamas took action to stop the controversial Israeli offensive. The details of the agreement between Hamas and the US that led to Alexander's release have not been made public. It is hoped that this is a step towards peace and the release of the remaining hostages still being held in the Gaza Strip.
