The captive, a 43-year-old former member of the Russian rugby team from Kazan, reportedly joined the war following the collapse of his cryptocurrency company. His unusual background as both an athlete and a participant in the conflict was highlighted by the capture, which was reported on August 18, 2025.

The captured Russian, using the call sign "Rugby Player", expressed that he did not want to kill Ukrainians. Before his capture, he was in debt to the tune of 6 million rubles. It is reported that his new girlfriend advised him to earn money through war.
