Captive Emily Damari shares her ordeal and the significant hand gesture that emerged as a symbol
Emily Damari, a captivity survivor, shared her harrowing 471-day journey in Gaza at an event hosted by Asuta Ashdod Public Hospital. The event was attended by senior figures in Israel's economy, as Damari returned with a smile to show her courage and freedom.
During her captivity, Damari endured passages through terror tunnels, abandoned houses, and cages. Despite her current presence, her heart is not whole. Two of her friends, Gali and Ziv Berman, are still in Hamas captivity.
Gali Berman, a 27-year-old twin sibling from Kibbutz Kfar Aza, was with Damari on the morning of October 7. When the rocket barrages began, Berman came to Damari without hesitation. Damari even called Berman during the barrages to ensure his presence.
The Berman twins are among several hostages held by Hamas. The United Nations is being called upon by the brothers of hostages to demand Hamas release captives. However, Hamas officials have signaled a willingness to resume hostage talks.
In a statement, Hamas officials asserted, "Hamas will not compromise until we step on them." This stance has raised concerns for the safety and wellbeing of the hostages, including the Berman twins.
Despite the ongoing situation, Damari's iconic hand gesture, a symbol of her captivity, stands as a testament to her resilience. Her story serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by those caught in the midst of conflict and the importance of bringing an end to hostage situations.
In a brave move, Damari addressed the nation, sharing her experiences and calling for the release of her friends. Her courage and determination serve as a beacon of hope for those still in Hamas captivity and for the nation as a whole.
