Capitals seek offensive revival in Utah rematch against the Mammoth

The Washington Capitals return to action on Thursday night in Utah, facing the Mammoth in the second game of their three-match western road trip. The team looks to improve their offensive output after scoring two or fewer goals in 10 of their last 11 games.

Goaltender Logan Thompson will start for the sixth straight game, showing stronger form since the Olympic break. His recent performances have been sharper than his season averages, with a 5-4-2 record, a 2.10 goals-against average, and a .923 save percentage over his last 11 appearances.

Washington's lineup remains uncertain ahead of the match. Center David Kampf rejoined the squad on Wednesday after taking personal leave to be with his wife for the birth of their child. Coach Spencer Carbery had not confirmed Kampf's availability for Thursday but welcomed his return.

Winger Ethen Frank, who sat out Tuesday's trip opener in St. Louis due to a lower-body injury, skated on Thursday morning. However, he wore a light blue non-contact sweater, suggesting he may not yet be ready for full play. The Capitals could stick with the same lineup from their previous game, though final decisions were still pending as of Thursday morning. Meanwhile, former Washington netminder Vitek Vanecek is expected to start in goal for Utah. This will be the second meeting between the two teams this month. The Mammoth previously edged the Capitals 3-2 in Washington earlier in March. Thompson, now in his 51st start of the season, has been more consistent since the Olympic break, never conceding more than three goals in a game during that stretch.

The Capitals aim to break their recent scoring struggles against a Utah side they lost to just weeks ago. Thompson's improved form gives them a steadier defensive foundation, while the return of Kampf and potential availability of Frank could bolster their attack. The result will shape momentum for the final leg of their road trip.
