Washington Capitals Eyeing Contract Extension for John Carlson

The Washington Capitals are considering extending the contract of John Carlson after the current season, according to reports. The defenseman's consistent production has been a key factor in the team's success, and the front office is eager to secure his services for the future.

Carlson, who is third in franchise history in games played, is just 17 games behind Nicklas Backstrom for second place. With the current season underway, it's likely that he will eclipse that mark and move into second place in the Capitals' all-time games played list.

Alex Ovechkin, the team's all-time leader in games played, could be nearing the end of his career, which may open up more opportunities for Carlson to take on a larger role within the team. The Capitals' front office has shown a willingness to part with longtime players if necessary, as seen with the departure of Dmitry Orlov and Evgeny Kuznetsov. Both Orlov and Kuznetsov are top-15 in games played with the Capitals.

Wilson, who is 31 years old, also joins the group of top eight players in games played for the Capitals. Three of the top eight players are currently active, with Carlson serving as a key figure among them.

The Capitals are counting on Carlson to continue his strong play this season, particularly on the penalty kill and powerplay units. He is expected to be on the top penalty kill unit and the top powerplay unit this season, and will lead the top rotation with Jakob Chychrun.

If Carlson can help the Capitals win another Stanley Cup in the 2025-26 season, it could help secure his next contract. The team plans to continue relying on Carlson as a key defense leader, supported by emerging defensemen like Rasmus Sandin and Jakob Chychrun. Carlson is set to serve as the team's defense captain for the 2025/26 season, with the team aiming to build on their strong previous season performance with Carlson as a central figure in defense.
