Capital hosts inaugural international competition for the first time
The city of Astana is set to host the Astana 2025 World Boccia Challenger from August 22 to 27, marking the first time this international boccia tournament is held in the city. This event is significant as it provides athletes with the opportunity to earn ranking points for participation in the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
The competition, which is a qualifying tournament under the auspices of the International Boccia Federation (BISFed), will take place at the Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov Martial Arts Palace. The tournament strengthens Kazakhstan's position in the Paralympic movement and promotes inclusive sports in the region, according to Nurguль Ulzhekova, general secretary of the Kazakhstan Boccia Federation.
So far, 13 countries and 60 athletes from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East have confirmed their participation. While the exact number of participating countries may vary slightly, it is clear that the event is attracting a diverse international field.
The tournament is organized by the Kazakhstan Boccia Federation with the support of several entities, including the Astana Akimat, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan, AO "Samruk-Kazyna", Sport Qory Fund, Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), and other partners.
The competition program includes individual, doubles, and team categories. Ten top Kazakhstani players, including Itiya Shingis khanova and Almat Yerat, will compete in both individual and team events.
While the Astana 2025 World Boccia Challenger is a significant event for Kazakhstan's Paralympic movement, further details about specific partners and the exact schedule can be found in official event releases or the organizer’s official social media channels closer to or during the event days. This event is a testament to the growth in boccia's international presence in Kazakhstan and the country's commitment to promoting inclusive sports.
Football practices at the Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov Martial Arts Palace will be temporarily suspended from August 22 to 27, making way for the Astana 2025 World Boccia Challenger tournament. Despite the distraction of a different sport occupying the venue, the upcoming boccia tournament is expected to attract a diverse international field of 60 athletes from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, strengthening Kazakhstan's position in the Paralympic movement and promoting inclusive sports in the region.
