Hit the Pavement for Self-Transcendence: A Journey Beyond Limits
In the heart of Central Park, Nur-Sultan played host to the tenth annual ultramarathon "Self-Transcendence - Self-Transcendence" this year. The event transformed into more than just a sporting occasion, evolving into a celebration of healthy lifestyle living.
Part of the "Comprehensive Plan to Counteract Drug Crime and Prevent Drug Addiction", the marathon was held alongside events commemorating the Day of Struggle against Drug Addiction. Senior Lieutenant Aliya Kibatkyzy, head of the Anti-Narcotics Department of Nur-Sultan's Police Department, shared their motivation behind these events:
The marathon was co-organized by the capital's police department and the Nur-Sultan Running Club and Health Lifestyle Club. Spanning two days, the race covered various disciplines — 6 hours, 100 km, 24 hours, and 48 hours. A campsite equipped with food and other amenities catered to the comfort of the participants.
Over sixty individuals participated in the marathon, with athletes representing not just the capital but also other cities and countries. The oldest participant, Talapnur Baizak, a 75-year-old veteran athlete, garnered particular interest. Sharing his sentiments, Talapnur stated:
At the finish line, each participant was greeted with applause, and during the awards ceremony, medals, cups, and thematic souvenirs were handed out to everyone.
The Self-Transcendence ultramarathons, inspired by the spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy, have become well-known in the ultrarunning community for years. Starting from a 24-hour race in 1980 in New York, these events have since expanded globally to include events in the United States, Europe, Asia, and beyond. The annual Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race in New York City is the most recognized event.
The purpose of the Self-Transcendence ultramarathons is to push participants to surpass their perceived physical and spiritual limits, fostering self-discovery, endurance, and personal growth. The events develop a supportive community where runners motivate and inspire each other to go beyond their boundaries.
While concrete plans for future Self-Transcendence ultramarathons in Nur-Sultan aren't explicitly mentioned, they remain a possibility as the global reach of these races extends to various localities. To find out about upcoming events, it is best to connect with local running clubs or the official Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team website.
