Cannes 2025 Opens with La Vénus électrique and Honors Streisand, Jackson
The 79th Cannes Film Festival will open on May 12 with La Vénus électrique, the latest film from French director Pierre Salvadori. This year's event will also honour Barbra Streisand and Peter Jackson with honorary Palme d'Or awards. The opening ceremony will be hosted by French actor Eye Haïdara. The festival's official lineup will be announced on April 9. La Vénus électrique, Salvadori's 11th feature, stars Pio Marmaï, Anaïs Demoustier, Gilles Lellouche, Vimala Pons and Gustave Kervern. Under Cannes rules, the film will premiere in cinemas across France on the same day as its festival debut.
South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook will lead the jury, taking over from last year's president, Juliette Binoche. The 2023 festival opened with Leave One Day, the first feature by Amélie Bonnin, produced by Philippe Martin at Les Films Pelléas. This year's edition will mark a return to tradition with a high-profile French production launching the event. La Vénus électrique will screen on May 12, kicking off 12 days of competition and special events. Streisand and Jackson will receive their awards during the festival, adding to the star-studded programme. The full selection of films, including the official competition entries, will be revealed next month.
