Finding the Right Leadership for Wangerooge: A Record-Breaking Candidate Hunt
Over 400 contenders vying for the position of Island Mayor on Wangerooge - Candidates numbering approximately 400 vying for the position of Mayor on the island of Wangerooge
Attention Wangerooge! Over 400 residents have applied for the mayor position, surprising the local political parties CDU, SPD, and Greens. Green council member Peter Kuchenbuch-Hanken confirmed, "The people we aimed to find, are among the applicants." With such a strong response, the parties are confident they'll find a united candidate for the August 17 election.
This unusual candidate search began with a job advertisement placed in local newspapers from late March. The ad read, "Join us on this journey to shape the future of Wangerooge in a crucial position!" Responsibilities listed included the municipal administration, finance, public order office, and human resources, as well as representative tasks. The dream candidate was expected to make Wangerooge their main residence.
Following the applications, the parties plan to conduct initial video conferences, followed by job interviews on the island. The ultimate goal is to support the candidate for the mayoral office collectively. Independent candidatures are also an option for the office. Before the ad was released, a candidate had already come forward.
The vacancy on the North Sea island with around 1,100 inhabitants arose since the last mayor stepped down in autumn 2023 due to a council dispute. Skilled workforce shortage is evident even on Wangerooge, with the parties acknowledging finding suitable administrative employees for an island to be challenging, in some cases, even compared to mainland regions.
Public job announcements have proven effective for the island in the past. Much like in 2018, when the three parties found their late mayor Marcel Fangohr through a recruitment ad after the previous town hall head's sudden demise.
It's possible that the search for a new lighthouse keeper last year may have influenced this novel candidate search, suggested Kuchenbuch-Hanken. That position saw a viral job posting from the municipality, bringing the island widespread attention nationwide.
