Candidate Vernikov aims for District 48 re-election following a victorious primary election
In the heated 2022 Republican primary for New York City's Council District 48, incumbent Councilwoman Inna Vernikov emerged victorious, securing a 32% margin over her challenger, former Council Member Ari Kagan. The district, which encompasses heavily Jewish neighbourhoods in southern Brooklyn, witnessed a contentious race marked by questions of party loyalty, ideological purity, and personal political identities.
Vernikov, a staunch pro-MAGA councilwoman, was endorsed by Donald Trump Jr., who labelled her a "MAGA fighter" and criticised Kagan as a "hack and fake Republican." This endorsement highlighted a primary conflict over defining authentic Republican values in the district. Kagan, who recently switched parties from Democrat to Republican, faced criticism from Vernikov and her supporters for perceived opportunism and questions about his Republican authenticity.
The race was described as "nasty," reflecting a heated and divisive primary battle with significant negative campaigning. Assembly Members Alec Brook-Krasny, Michael Novakhov, and former state Sen. Marty Golden backed Kagan, while Vernikov received support from the NYPD, DSNY, and all city agencies, as well as President Donald Trump, who she credits for helping improve the migrant crisis.
Vernikov has remained vocal in her opposition to the Coney Island casino, a contentious issue in the district. She believes a Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Socialist frontrunner for mayor, would be detrimental to the city. The primary was marred by allegations of voter fraud, which have been referred to the Brooklyn District Attorney for investigation.
Vernikov's priorities for the district include improving quality of life on neighbourhood streets, being a strong common-sense voice in City Hall, and addressing public safety, the impact of the migrant crisis, quality of life concerns, and preserving the neighbourhood's character. She is a vocal advocate against antisemitism and wants Jews to feel safe in the city.
Inna Vernikov's office has secured funding for neighbourhood beautification, a new stop sign, and repaired a public water fountain. Despite the fractured and strained state of the southern Brooklyn GOP following the primary, Vernikov extends congratulations to Kagan and proposes working together to confront the rise of Mamdani as a frontrunner for mayor.
In the upcoming general election on Nov. 4, Vernikov will face Democratic nominee Anzhela Pinkhasov. The outcome of this election will shape the future of Council District 48 and New York City as a whole.
