Stefan Thoma, a 36-year-old enthusiast hailing from Niederkail, Bernkastel-Wittlich district, has taken the reins in the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament following the unexpected demise of former Justice Minister, Herbert Mertin. Previously, Thoma graced the halls of two nearby educational institutions as a dedicated teacher, before making his mark in the political sphere. This latest development was proudly announced by the FDP faction in Mainz.

In a humble, heartfelt statement, Thoma expressed, "I am deeply honored that the faction has confided in me to tackle the landespolitically significant field of education." With a keen eye focused on the digitalization of schools and the improvement of students' language skills, Thoma signals a promising future as education spokesperson.

Herbert Mertin, a respected figure in the state, left this world at the tender age of 66 at the end of February. A moving tribute to Mertin's life will be held this coming Friday, March 14th, within the magnificent Basilica of St. Castor in Koblenz.
