Canadian Kneecap Ban in Limbo as Band Denies Official Notice

Controversy surrounds the Canadian entry status of Irish rap group Kneecap. While the Canadian government has publicly confirmed a ban, the band claims no official notice has been received. Federal Conservatives question the government's handling of the situation.

Last week, Liberal MP Vince Gasparro announced Kneecap's members were deemed ineligible for entry ahead of their scheduled concerts. Gasparro cited a U.K. terrorism-related charge against band member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh as the reason for the ban. However, a British judge recently dismissed this case.

The band's manager, Daniel Lambert, confirmed they have not heard from the Canadian government beyond Gasparro's announcement. Kneecap claims they have not received any official notice or rejection of their electronic travel authorizations. Federal Conservatives have questioned whether the ban is indeed in place and have called for an investigation into Gasparro's announcement. Conservatives also raised concerns about the Liberals' commitment to fighting antisemitism and hate speech due to the confusion surrounding Kneecap's case. Despite these queries, the Prime Minister's Office and Public Safety Minister's office have not provided clarity on Kneecap's immigration status.

The Canadian government's ban on Irish rap group Kneecap remains unclear, with the band and opposition parties seeking official confirmation. The dismissed U.K. charge against a band member further complicates the situation, leaving the entry status of Kneecap uncertain.
