Canadian documentary "The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue" has had its invitation for a screening in Toronto revoked.

The documentary The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue, a Canadian production, has been withdrawn from the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) due to the lack of legal clearance of all footage used in the film.

The film, which tells the story of retired Israel Defense Forces General Noam Tibon who went on a mission to rescue family members during the October 7 attacks, was not part of the TIFF Docs announcement on August 6. The festival organisers later announced the withdrawal on August 13, citing the absence of proper permission, including for footage related to Hamas, as the key issue leading to the decision.

TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey emphasised that this decision was not an act of censorship but rather a matter of legal compliance. He expressed a desire to work with the filmmaker to meet the screening requirements and made clear that the festival values the film’s perspective and the important story it tells about the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in Israel.

The filmmaking team of "The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue" expressed disappointment at the festival's decision to censor its programming. This is not the first time TIFF has faced controversy over its programming. Last year, the festival pulled screenings of "Russians At War" due to threats to festival operations and public safety. Other festivals, including Locarno, have also seen protests around the Gaza conflict.

Despite the withdrawal, the documentary's producers remain hopeful about finding other platforms to share their powerful story with audiences. The film is expected to be screened at other film festivals in the near future.

As for TIFF, the festival reserves the right to disqualify films deemed not in its best interest to include in the festival. TIFF requested conditions to protect itself from legal implications and manage risks associated with screening sensitive subject matter.

Looking ahead, Black Bear, Universal, and True Brit executives are scheduled to join the speaker line-up for Screen Summit 2025, where the future of filmmaking and festival programming is sure to be a topic of discussion.
