Canada's Soccer Hall of Fame inductions for 2025 feature Christine Sinclair and Diana Matheson.
Rewritten Article:
Canada Soccer Hall of Fame welcomes four legendary figures with Christine Sinclair, Diana Matheson, Lars Hirschfeld, and Michelle Pye forming the Class of 2025. This illustrious group is set to make history, as they showcase their unrivaled contributions to soccer in the Great White North.
The announcement comes from Canada Soccer president, Peter Augruso, who praised their collective impact on the sport, stating, "These four individuals have left an indelible mark on Canadian soccer, and it's an honor to have them inducted into the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame."
Previously, there was a five-year waiting period for candidates to be eligible for the Hall of Fame. However, Sinclair, the world's all-time leading goal-scorer, was the exception, with the Canada Soccer Heritage and Hall of Fame Committee making a unanimous decision to expedite her selection. Sinclair, with 190 goals and 54 assists in 331 international appearances, becomes the first player to have the waiting period waived.
While Sinclair called it a career on the international stage with a swansong on Dec. 5, 2023, she continues to blaze trails as co-owner of the NSL's Vancouver Rise. Her club record-breaking feats and leadership on the field have solidified her status as a Canadian soccer icon.
In a testament to her relentless drive, her former teammate, Hall of Famer Karina LeBlanc, once said, "Her poise in front of the net and her ability to put the ball where the goalkeeper is not, is why she is who she is. Because she's at home in front."
Similarly, Diana Matheson, proven goal-scorer and midfield sensation, continues to carve her name in Canadian soccer history. Matheson, an integral part of the Northern Super League, also makes her mark as the Chief Growth Officer, as well as part of the Ottawa Rapid's ownership group. Her 92nd-minute goal against France at the 2012 Olympics sealed Canada's bronze medal and showcased her determination on the field.
Behind the scenes, Lars Hirschfeld excelled as a goalkeeper, representing Canada for 17 years. Hirschfeld's impressive resume showcased titles in Canada, Norway, and Romania, as well as recognition for his formidable performance in the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Michelle Pye's contributions to the sport extend beyond the field, as she earned her place in the Hall of Fame for her work as a referee. A former member of the FIFA List of Referees, Pye officiated various international and youth competitions, including the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup held in Canada.
This extraordinary foursome will be celebrated in their respective induction ceremonies, with Sinclair and Matheson honored during a Canadian women's game this summer, and Hirschfeld recognized at an upcoming Canadian men's match. In recognition of her refereeing achievements, Pye will be honored on May 3 at the Canada Soccer Awards Banquet in Niagara Falls.
With these inductions, the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame will expand its roster to include 147 players, 13 coaches, 11 officials, and 45 builders, further highlighting their commitment to soccer in Canada.
