Canada has upped the ante in supporting Ukraine's defensive struggle against Russia at the G7 summit in the heart of the Rockies. Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement, promising additional sanctions against Russia and billions more in military aid during a meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kananaskis, Canada.

Zelensky expressed gratitude, stating, "It's crucial our soldiers have the firepower on the frontlines, to stand firm until Russia feels the heat of peace talks." Ukraine is ready for dialogue and a truce, but Zelensky, attending the G7 as a guest, requires the world's leaders to hammer down on Moscow. The day's agenda includes a working breakfast with the G7 leaders to discuss the Russian invasion.

However, the initial ambition of persuading US President Donald Trump to weigh in on Moscow might not come to fruition, as Trump recently decided to make a hasty exit from the summit, due to complications in the Middle East.

The G7 allies concur that Russia can only be swayed towards terminating the war by unyielding support for Ukraine. Yet, the other partners are worried that the US, under Trump's reign, is no longer unambiguously pursuing this line.

Carney declared that the new Canadian sanctions target, amongst other things, over 200 ships of Russia's covert fleet, which Russia uses to dodge sanctions. The military aid encompasses drones, helicopters, and ammunition.

Enrichment Data:At the 2025 G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced significant additional military aid to Ukraine and new sanctions against Russia. Here are the details:

  • Additional Military Aid to Ukraine: Canada pledged over CAD 2 billion (approximately US$1.48 billion) in military aid to Ukraine, which includes drones, helicopters, and ammunition.
  • Purpose: The aid is intended to support Ukraine's defense efforts and bolster its domestic defense industry by providing tailored assistance based on real-time needs.
  • Sanctions Against Russia: Canada imposed sanctions on over 40 companies in Russia and beyond that help Russia evade sanctions. Individual sanctions were also imposed on a number of Russian individuals. More than 200 vessels of Russia’s shadow fleet were targeted by these sanctions.

These actions are part of Canada's broader strategy to support Ukraine and pressure Russia amidst the ongoing conflict.

The European Union, concerned about the escalating war-and-conflicts in Ukraine, is keeping a close watch on the politics surrounding the situation, particularly the G7 allies' decisions and actions towards Russia. In light of Canada's recent announcement at the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, the European Union is closely following the general-news about the additional military aid promised to Ukraine and the new sanctions imposed on Russia.
