The diplomatic landscape of the Middle East is shifting, with several countries announcing their intention to recognise the State of Palestine. This wave of recognitions follows a series of events, particularly Israel's attacks on Gaza, which have heightened tensions in the region.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney recently announced that Canada will recognise the State of Palestine, a decision conditional on Hamas remaining excluded and disarmed. This move comes after a Middle East-focused meeting chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron, where Carney expressed solidarity with Qatar following recent Israeli attacks.

The United Kingdom is also preparing diplomatic measures for the recognition of Palestine, with a planned announcement scheduled for September 2025. This decision is part of an effort to work towards increased peace and security in the region.

The series of recognitions has been gaining momentum. Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, the Bahamas, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Slovenia, Armenia, and Mexico have all announced upcoming recognitions, with various conditions attached. For instance, Malta has signaled its support for Palestine within the EU, with an intended recognition announcement in September 2025.

In addition to recognitions, the meeting participants agreed on a lasting ceasefire, the release of all hostages, the disarmament of Hamas, and the delivery of essential humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians. They also agreed to work towards increased peace and security in the region.

Notably, Belgium has announced it will recognise the state of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September 2025, joining other Western countries such as France and Canada. However, Belgium's formal recognition is conditional on all hostages being released and the terrorist organisation Hamas no longer playing a role in the administration of Palestinian territories.

As the international community continues to engage in diplomatic measures, the High-Level General Debate of the 80th U.N. General Assembly will commence on Sept. 23, providing a platform for further discussions and potential decisions regarding the future of Palestine.
