In a statement made by Constable Amy Boudreau, spokesperson for York Regional Police, the authorities confirmed that they are investigating the vandalism of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Vishnu Mandir in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, as a hate and bias-motivated incident. The vandalism, which occurred in June 2020, included 'visual words' such as 'rapist' and 'Khalistan,' according to Boudreau. She added that York Regional Police takes the impact of hate crimes seriously and investigates them thoroughly. The Indian high commission in Ottawa has expressed deep anguish over the vandalism, and the Indian government has approached the Canadian government to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice promptly. The Indian Consular Office General in Toronto also expressed distress over the incident. The vandalism has caused enhanced concern and insecurity in the Indian community in Canada.
