Campus community grapples with tragic death of African American student, as family demands separate postmortem examination to determine cause
A 21-year-old Black student named Demartravion 'Trey' Reed was found hanging from a tree on Delta State University's campus in Cleveland, Mississippi, on Monday. The tragic discovery has led to a series of calls for a larger investigation into the circumstances surrounding Reed's death.
University President Dan Ennis confirmed that they are cooperating with investigators and meeting with Reed's family. In a statement, Ennis expressed his condolences, saying, 'We give them our love and support, and we know that we can never fully heal this wound.'
However, Reed's family is seeking an independent autopsy, citing conflicting accounts and incomplete information about the circumstances of his death. The costs of this independent autopsy will be financed by Colin Kaepernick’s 'Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative.' Attorney Ben Crump, who represents Reed's family, announced that the initiative will cover the expenses for the second autopsy after the state's medical examiner releases Reed’s body.
The Mississippi State Medical Examiner has ruled Reed's death a suicide. However, Crump and Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., have called for an independent autopsy to uncover the truth about Reed's death. Crump stated, 'Trey's family deserves answers they can trust,' while Thompson emphasised, 'We must leave no stone unturned in the search for answers.'
Despite allegations of foul play circulating online, officials have stated there is no evidence of such. Nevertheless, the family is not alone in calling for a larger investigation into Reed's death. Delta University students are seeking answers, with Kolby Horace, a senior studying sports management, expressing a desire for justice and the truth.
In addition to the calls for an independent autopsy, Rep. Thompson has also called for a federal investigation into Reed's death. Thompson stated, 'We must ensure that a thorough and transparent investigation is conducted to provide answers and bring closure to Trey's family, friends, and the Delta State University community.'

In this difficult time, the focus remains on seeking the truth and providing answers for Reed's family and the Delta State University community. As Crump stated, 'Peace will come only by getting to the truth.'
