In the bustling city of New York, a new independent expenditure group, Livable Future PAC, has been launched to support Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani. The PAC's pitch to potential voters includes the claim that Mamdani would further job creation, make energy bills more affordable, and lower pollution through policies to maximize energy efficiency. Livable Future PAC, led by Pete Sikora, is focusing on messaging and canvassing in specific neighbourhoods, particularly those with significant Black and Caribbean populations. The PAC aims to raise and spend approximately $50,000, which will fund at least two full-time staffers. Recent polls indicate that Mamdani is gaining momentum among Black voters. In a Marist College poll conducted Sept. 8 to 11, Mamdani has a lead of 21 points over Cuomo among Black voters. Similarly, in a YouGov/CBS poll conducted Sept. 7 to 13, Mamdani has a lead of 15 points over Cuomo among the same demographic. However, Rich Azzopardi, a spokesperson for Cuomo's campaign, dismissed Livable Future PAC's attempt to shift Black voters away from Cuomo and toward Mamdani. Azzopardi stated that Cuomo's relationship with Black communities reaches back decades and that they are not going to be swayed by the PAC's efforts. Azzopardi described the PAC as a 'petty group of paid protesters' and accused them of lying about Cuomo's record for years. Despite this, Mamdani's campaign already has an army of volunteer canvassers, and during the primary, more than 30,000 canvassers and phonebankers knocked on New Yorkers' doors 1.6 million times for Mamdani. The PAC's efforts will complement these existing efforts, focusing on highlighting Mamdani's pro-climate policies, specifically his support for enforcing the Local Law 97 energy efficiency mandate. The PAC's strategy could also help NYCC build support for more local laws aimed at increasing energy efficiency. Canvassing homeowners in targeted neighbourhoods, such as Wakefield in the Bronx and East Flatbush/Canarsie in Brooklyn, could potentially sway voters in Mamdani's favour. The election is drawing near, and the race between Mamdani and Cuomo is heating up. With the support of groups like Livable Future PAC, Mamdani's promises of job creation, affordable energy bills, and lower pollution could resonate with voters, potentially tipping the scales in his favour.
