Camp Nou's massive expansion will make it Europe's first 100,000-seat stadium
FC Barcelona's iconic Camp Nou stadium is undergoing a major renovation and expansion. Once complete, it will become the first European stadium to hold over 100,000 fans. The project is set to finish by the end of 2026 or early 2027, though parts of the ground will reopen sooner.
The Camp Nou has long been Europe's largest football stadium, originally seating 99,534 spectators. Now, its capacity will grow to 105,000 after the current upgrades. Work on the interior is expected to finish later this year, while the exterior will take longer to complete.
FC Barcelona plans a phased return to the stadium. On November 22, 2025, the team will play in front of 45,000 fans. This number will later rise to 62,000 before reaching full capacity. The club's museum, home to historic jerseys and trophies—including a large Champions League cup—will also remain part of the venue.
The stadium's history ties back to the club's Swiss founder, Hans Max Gamper, who established FC Barcelona in 1899. His former team, FC Basel, may have inspired the club's colours. Over the years, legends like Lionel Messi, who won eight Ballon d'Or awards during his 21 years at the club, have played at the Camp Nou.
The renovation will transform the Camp Nou into the continent's first stadium with six-figure seating. Fans will see gradual access as work progresses, with full use expected by 2027. The expanded venue will maintain its status as a key landmark for both football and Barcelona's heritage.
