Cambridge dictionary adds new slang terms: 'Skibidi' and 'tradwife' join its lexicon.

In a recent update, the Cambridge Dictionary has added a host of new terms to its lexicon, reflecting the ever-evolving nature of language in the digital age. The new additions include the slang terms "skibidi," "delulu," and "tradwife," among others, which originated from internet culture and societal changes in 2025.

"Skibidi" is a term that found its roots in a viral YouTube animated series called Skibidi Toilet. The series features toilets with human heads, and the word has varied meanings, including "cool," "bad," or simply as a joke or filler with no real meaning. It is often used humorously to mean "look" or to describe a distinctive style or impressive outfit, popularized by shows like RuPaul's Drag Race. The term is considered a playful slang term often used among younger internet users.

"Delulu" is internet slang that shortens "delusional." It is commonly used online to describe someone who is out of touch with reality, often humorously or ironically, especially within fan communities or social media culture.

"Tradwife" is a shortened term for "traditional wife," referring to a woman who embraces traditional gender roles in marriage, such as homemaking and supporting her husband, in modern society. The term highlights cultural debates about gender roles and lifestyle choices, reflecting a resurgence or re-examination of traditional values in contrast to contemporary social norms.

The Cambridge Dictionary's inclusion of these words illustrates its descriptive approach to language, aiming to record how English is currently used, particularly the influence of internet culture, social media, and shifting societal trends. Some critics argue words like "skibidi" are fleeting slang that may not deserve formal dictionary status, but lexicographers consider their widespread and sustained use sufficient for inclusion.

The online edition of the Cambridge Dictionary has added 6,000 new words over the last year, with "delulu" and "inspo" (short for inspiration) being among the new entries. The term "solulu" was also added, though no specific definition was provided in the online edition.

Other new entries include "lewk," a term used to describe a unique fashion look, popularized by RuPaul's Drag Race, and "forever chemical," a man-made chemical that stays in the environment for years and has gained traction due to concerns about the irreversible impact of climate change on human health and the environment.

The Cambridge Dictionary's Lexical Programme manager, Colin McIntosh, stated that it is fascinating to observe and capture changes in the English language due to internet culture. The additions underscore how digital culture and social trends shape modern English vocabulary.

In a 2025 speech in parliament, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese used the phrase "delulu with no solulu," highlighting the term's growing popularity and acceptance in mainstream culture. The Cambridge Dictionary's decision to include these terms reflects its commitment to documenting the evolution of language and capturing the essence of modern culture.
