Cambodian Prime Minister announces nomination of Donald Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Cambodia Nominates Donald Trump for Nobel Peace Prize
In a surprising turn of events, Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet has officially nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. The nomination, made in August 2025, recognizes Trump's significant role in helping to end the border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand that erupted in July 2025.
The intense five-day conflict resulted in the death of 43 people and the displacement of over 300,000. The violence started with small arms fire and escalated into heavy artillery and rocket fire, followed by Thailand's deployment of an F-16 fighter jet for airstrikes.
Trump's intervention was crucial in breaking the deadlock and paving the way towards the restoration of peace. On July 26, he made a call to the leaders of both countries, urging them to stop the fighting and warning about the risks to their trade relations with the U.S. His efforts culminated in a ceasefire agreement signed on July 28, 2025, following negotiations in Malaysia.
Hun Manet lauded Trump's "extraordinary statesmanship" and "exceptional achievements in de-escalating tensions" in the region. Both countries agreed to ensure no reigniting of hostilities and to allow observers from Southeast Asia.
This nomination is part of several awarded or proposed Nobel Peace Prize nominations for Trump in 2025. Earlier in the year, Pakistan and Israel had also announced their intentions to nominate him for his mediation roles in other conflicts.
Trump's nomination is a testament to his ability to mediate and de-escalate tensions in some of the world's most volatile regions. The nomination letter highlights his role in averting a potentially devastating conflict between Cambodia and Thailand, and preventing a great loss of lives.
