Cambodia plans to propose Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, recognizing his contribution in resolving Cambodia's disputes with Thailand.

Donald Trump has been officially nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Cambodia, in recognition of his role in helping to broker a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand[1][3]. The nomination comes after a five-day border conflict that started following a landmine explosion along the border, which wounded five Thai soldiers[4].

The ceasefire was negotiated in Malaysia in July 2025, following Trump's urging for the leaders of both countries to halt hostilities. He threatened to withhold trade relations until peace was established[1]. This nomination follows other nominations, such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's nomination of Trump for the peace prize earlier in 2025 for separate peace efforts[1][2].

The ceasefire agreement aims to end the border conflict that resulted in the death of at least 43 people and displaced more than 300,000 people on both sides of the border[5]. The reduced tariff rate of 36% would have still had a significant impact on Cambodia's garment and footwear sector[6]. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that President Trump's direct involvement led to the ceasefire[7].

Trump himself claimed that he prevented a "very nasty war" between Cambodia and Thailand[8]. He urged a ceasefire last week when speaking to the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand, and later congratulated them following the ceasefire[9]. Sun Chanthol, Cambodia's deputy prime minister, thanked Trump for his efforts towards peace[10].

Reuters contributed to this report. This nomination adds to the growing list of Nobel Peace Prize nominations for Trump, which also includes nominations by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Pakistani officials[11].

The nomination of Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize by Cambodia, following his role in brokering a ceasefire, is a move that reflects the political landscape amidst war-and-conflicts, as evidenced by the ongoing border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. This nomination follows other nominations from figures like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and highlights Trump's involvement in general-news events resulting in peace efforts.
