"Calling for severe punishment, a father demands justice for his son's murder, specifically naming Prime Minister Hasina and others involved."
News Article: Father Seeks Justice in Son's Shooting Death During 2024 Chankharpool Mass Uprising
Sheikh Jamal Hasan, the father of Sheikh Mehedi Hasan Junaid alias Mostakim, has called for justice in the shooting death of his son during the mass uprising in the capital's Chankharpool area last year.
On August 12, 2022, Jamal testified before International Crimes Tribunal-1, accusing former Armed Police Battalion (APBn) constable Md Sujon Hossain of shooting his son to death.
Mostakim was shot dead on August 5, 2024, during the mass uprising. According to Jamal, his son left home around 10:45am that day to join the movement. At 1:45pm, his brother-in-law called to inform him that Mostakim had been shot. Friends rushed him to Mitford Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Jamal has also sought punishment for former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman, and others accused in the same case. He expressed a desire for the highest punishment for the criminals involved.
In his testimony, Jamal alleged that the then prime minister had instructed that Mostakim's body not be kept at Mitford Hospital and that if the family did not take it away quickly, it would be handed over to a charity or dumped into the Buriganga River.
Video footage of the 5 August shooting, which went viral on social media, shows APBn's former constable Sujon Hossain opening fire on protesters. In court, Jamal identified Sujon during cross-examination.
So far, three witnesses have given depositions in the case, including Jamal and two other witnesses who testified today. Four of the eight accused were present in the tribunal, while the remaining, including Habibur Rahman, are on the run.
An audio clip was submitted in court, in which ex-DMP commissioner Habibur was heard ordering police to shoot protesters during the uprising. This indicates that legal proceedings are ongoing, with evidence suggesting high-level involvement in the police action that led to Mostakim's death.
Jamal has demanded the highest punishment for Sheikh Hasina and others accused in connection with his son's killing. The case filed over crimes against humanity committed on August 5, 2024, in Chankharpool, where six people were shot dead, continues to unfold.
