Vogue's friendly chorister, Jeff Johnson from Minneapolis, took up the challenge by recreating Jared Leto's trend-setting look from the previous year's Met Gala (thanks to Gucci's courteous permission). Excited by the opportunity, Johnson explains his enthusiasm for the glamorous Met Gala, often watching it live and chatting about the looks with friends afterwards.
"I picked this look because Jared Leto’s effortless and gender-neutral style has always inspired me. Once the delicate crystal garland was secured, it took a couple of hours of scrambling to complete the project. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute!" he said in an email.
Rihanna and Sanja Nestorovic, from the New Yorker, discussed the interpretation of John Galliano's jewellery-adorned, pope-inspired gown that Rihanna wore to the Heavenly Bodies launch in 2018: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.
"The production of Rihanna’s dress may have taken around 5 hours. Everything used was recycled. No fabric, no sewing. Just paper, trash bags, and glue," Rihanna shared via Instagram DM.
Several enthusiastic participants have already accepted the challenge, including 7-year-old Aili Adalia Boler, who, with her mother Kanaya Monet in Atlanta since 2017, has been recreating Met Gala looks in the comfort of their home.
Zendaya played merry makers with young Aili during the 2017 Met Gala, sporting the Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons look. After much admiration for Zendaya's outfit, Kanaya was inspired to create a similar piece.
"It all started in 2017, when Alice and I attended the Met Gala 2017. Elle mentioned how much she loved Zendaya's dress. She loved it so much that she asked if I could create something similar? I thought, why not? I scouted for everything needed to replicate the look the best I could the next day and made it. I posted it on Elles Instagram to share," Kanaya recalled in a mail.
Since then, Adalia competes with the likes of Cardi B and Janelle Monae. "Usually, we'd sit down and watch the Met Gala, and Alice would pick a favorite look. I'd create it within 24 hours. We've become quite good and efficient,” shared Monet.
The winners of the #MetGalaChallenge will be announced on May 4th. A selection of entries will be showcased on Vogue's website and Instagram page.
