Headline: People Power Moves Again to Slash Southwest Parliament Size

The people of Southwest will soon spearhead a campaign for a leaner parliament, starting May 5th. FDP state chairman Hans-Ulrich Rülke confirmed this in Stuttgart, setting the town halls for signature collection till August 5th, with the open collection extending to November 5th. The goal? A whopping 770,000 signatures.

This ambitious mission has roots dating back: the FDP kickstarted the "Prevent XXL parliament" initiative in the past, gathered over 10,000 signatures, but the Ministry of the Interior deemed the planned constitutional change as unapprovable. However, in February, the Constitutional Court declared the initiative valid. So, here we are, starting again.

The FDP aims to decimate the electoral districts in Southwest from 70 to 38, cuts that would follow if they crack the million-signature mark. A similar endeavor from a private initiator fell short, coming up just under 130,000 signatures shy of the requisite quota.

Regardless of the effect on the 2026 state election, the FDP envisions change by 2031, according to Rülke. A smaller parliament could save resources and slash bureaucracy. The last initiative failed not due to the population's disinterest, but a lack of awareness, Rülke explained.
