Fresh Take on Christian Dürr Stepping Up as New FDP Leader

Get ready for a shake-up, as Christian Dürr prepares to lead the way for the FDP!

"Call for personal transformation ensues"

After a tumultuous election season, the FDP is gearing up for a new journey, with Christian Dürr set to take the wheel as the party's potential new chairperson. In an exclusive chat, he shares his vision for the future and why it's time for a change.

ntv.de: Mr. Dürr, with a new chancellor in office, did you feel sympathy for Mr. Merz after the failed first ballot?

Christian Dürr: It's not about sympathy. I long for a functional German government. However, I fear this government might not last due to lack of unity. I believe the MPs are starting to realize that the coalition agreement lacks future-proof solutions.

Since March, you've been out of the Bundestag. What have you been up to these past few months?

I've been reaching out to many people within and outside the FDP. I wanted to understand where we're headed and what my role could be as a potential party leader.

And what did you discover?

Change is Afoot Dürr's radical move for a fresh-faced team

One significant finding is the proposal for Nicole Büttner as the general secretary, an AI entrepreneur. It's quite unusual, but given the times, we need to shake things up and explore unconventional paths. People crave change, and that applies to the parties as well, so we'll see changes in our team.

But you were already a familiar face as faction leader. How does that fit?

We need a mix of fresh faces and experienced leaders. However, I also need to evolve. Bringing in a successful startup entrepreneur like Nicole as general secretary is a novel approach. We aspire to work more collaboratively as a team.

The FDP will hold its convention next week. Should this event send a message? Is it time to say, "We're still here," or "Remember us"?

No, it should communicate: You can rely on the Free Democrats. We aim to become Germany's most forward-thinking party, both in terms of organization and policy. We face a challenging international situation. People are worried about Germany's decline, and our problems are homegrown. We aren't growing fast enough anymore. Many young families question whether they can build a future here. Over 250,000 highly-educated young adults leave Germany each year. It's time for a party to think outside the box and generate innovative ideas.

Politics Stalemate in Chancellor Election Merz suffers humiliation as fate looks grim

You haven't differentiated yourself significantly from long-time chairman Christian Lindner so far. Will this sequence continue, with the slogan "2025 was a one-off"?

No, we'll also reinvent ourselves in terms of content. However, I don't define myself by differentiating myself from others. When discussing the economy in the past, too few people related it to their own lives. But it affects everyone. People feel: It can't keep going like this. Our country needs courageous, reform-focused policies.

So, it's back to lower taxes, as always with the FDP?

Lowering taxes isn't an end in itself. We reduced taxes in the traffic light coalition, but people didn't see more money in their wallets because social security contributions were increasing. The current government doesn't have a plan for this, none whatsoever.

CDU/CSU and SPD have declared economic growth a priority. That's what you want too, don't you?

Of course, we all support economic growth. It's about the right strategies. Mr. Klingbeil has announced a decrease in electricity prices, but in the future, taxpayers will subsidize electricity costs via the federal budget. Klingbeil is masking this. That's not a reform plan, it's a trick.

Politics FDP Leader Dürr Ready to Follow Lindner's Path HAS SOMEONE GOT TO PAY FOR THE ELECTRICITY?

Yes, it's time for a new approach to energy policy. Shutting down nuclear power was a detriment to climate protection. We have a higher CO2 emission per capita than France. But we also need to reconsider our immigration policy. It should be easier for people to come to Germany to work, not to idle.

You've already tackled that with the Skilled Worker Immigration Law and praised it as a major achievement.

It was a first step, and the law has taken effect. However, I can imagine more, and that's where the SPD fell short. I don't see any efforts in that area from the Union and SPD currently.

Back to energy policy: What's wrong with expanding renewable energies?

The issue lies in the excessive regulation by the government. I'm not opposed to expanding renewable energies, but politics must stop dictating technological choices. If the network expansion is carried out as planned, it will cost taxpayers or electricity users at least half a trillion euros.

But there's no going back to nuclear power now, is there?

We must keep an open mind for new forms of nuclear energy, such as small reactors and nuclear fusion, a new type of nuclear power. In Germany, we are prone to listing 20 reasons why something won't work. I'm not satisfied with that. We need to start saying: It's possible, let's try it out. It's the same with AI. First, Germany and Europe regulate everything, but let's try things out first and encourage enthusiasm for the new.

Entertainment Debate on Freedom Lindner's strange video message: Freedom, it's always about which freedom and whose freedom are important

It's not just about speed limits; it's about reducing traffic jams through AI technology. Take the example of self-employed people, who are being pushed to their limits. We are a party that values personal freedom and provides ideal conditions for everyone to achieve their goals. That's why the FDP is also a party for education.

You're still sticking to the debt brake, but you recently suggested 300 billion euros in debt for the Bundeswehr and also want to continue using old corona billions for the traffic light start. Isn't that a case of conflicting principles?

The debt brake compels politics to keep a tight rein on expenditures, but it's also flexible and would have allowed 50 billion euros in new debt this year. It's illogical to abolish the debt brake, as Schwarz-Rot and Greens want to do. However, we aren't dogmatic. We see the new geopolitical challenges, which is why we proposed a defense fund.

The new debt possibilities are supposed to also provide the freedom to do something: Renew the Bundeswehr and invest in infrastructure.

This is the true label swindle. In reality, spending on defense and infrastructure is actually decreasing in the actual federal budget. These new possibilities are created for political wishful thinking. Markus Söder is already celebrating new electric car subsidies. Political reform requires courage. I believe the people are ready to support reforms, but only if politicians show courage.

Politics Trust Barometer: AfD Equals Union - Little Trust in Merz Freedom, modernity, and courage, these sound appealing. But if it comes down to tax cuts and social cuts, many would also stand to lose. Why should I vote for the FDP if I have a medium or low income?**

If I have a medium income, half of my money goes to the government. I feel my prosperity diminishing. That's exactly who we target. They work hard, don't want to rely on state assistance. They yearn for more freedom. Are social services scarce? We're facing a different problem. Performance is not adequately rewarded.

You can count on being elected as party chairman. It would be the pinnacle of your political career. But what led you to the FDP?

I was a student in the 90s in the US and returned with a burst of energy. A friend convinced me to join the Young Liberals once. I initially thought it sounded as interesting as a chess club. But at that meeting, I discovered my enthusiasm for politics, the struggle for the best way, and the debate. As a student, I didn't know there was a party that centered on freedom and personal responsibility. I found my home in the FDP.

Mr. Lindner is a classic car buff, owns an old Porsche. What car do you drive?

I have an old Mini in the garage, model year 94, with a wooden steering wheel. It's from Rover, before the newer models. Alas, it's not running at the moment and requires repairs. Personally, I also drive a Mini, a newer model.
