California’s Christmas Eve storm leaves flooding, blackouts in its wake

Christmas Eve brought disruption to Peninsula residents as heavy rain caused flooding and power cuts. In Menlo Park, streets were submerged, while Half Moon Bay families faced blackouts that lasted into the next day. The severe weather left businesses and homes dealing with the aftermath.

In Menlo Park, Hamilton Avenue was closed due to rising floodwaters. The deluge damaged property, including Milo Correa’s fence and car. Nearby, Dashi Japanese Restaurant saw only a single lunchtime booking, as flooding kept customers away. Owner John Bek later suggested that regular street sweeping could help prevent similar issues in the future. The following day, crews were out clearing leaves left behind by the storm.

In Half Moon Bay, Kristi Reese’s family lost electricity just before midnight on Christmas Eve. Their plans to watch a film were put on hold as they considered other ways to pass the time. By morning, the skies had cleared, allowing Reese and her granddaughter to walk to a nearby convenience store—one of the few places with power. Even there, the shop relied on a well, meaning no running water was available during the outage.

The storm left a trail of minor damage and inconvenience across the Peninsula. Flooding in Menlo Park disrupted traffic and businesses, while power cuts in Half Moon Bay forced families to adjust their holiday plans. Cleanup efforts began the next day as crews worked to restore normalcy.
