Calgary Flames opt against re-signing Dillon Dube for their roster
Dillon Dube, a former Calgary Flames player and captain of the Canadian junior team in 2018, has been reinstated by the NHL after being acquitted of sexual assault charges in July 2021. The not-guilty verdict was delivered by an Ontario Superior Court justice following an eight-week trial.
The NHL has decided not to impose any further penalties on Dube or the four other players involved in the case, making them eligible to sign contracts on Oct. 15 and participate in games starting Dec. 1. The Crown has announced that it will not appeal the ruling.
Dube, who stands at five feet eleven inches tall and weighs 185 pounds, played forward position in hockey. Over six seasons with the Calgary Flames, he played 325 games, scoring 57 goals and recording 70 assists.
The incident that led to the charges occurred in 2018 when Dube was a member of Canada's world junior team in London, Ont. Since then, Dube took an indefinite leave from the Calgary Flames in January 2024 to attend to his mental health.
Following his leave, Dube has found a new opportunity with the Arizona Coyotes, but no further details about his current team or plans have been disclosed. Craig Conroy, the Flames' general manager, stated that the team is not interested in re-signing Dube at this point.
In January 2024, Dube, along with Carter Hart, Cal Foote, Michael McLeod, and Alex Formenton, were charged with sexual assault. The report was first published by The Canadian Press on Sept. 17, 2025.
