Calgary Flames honor South Asian culture with third annual celebration game
The Calgary Flames are preparing for their third annual South Asian Celebration Game on March 28, 2023. The event will feature a newly designed logo, live performances, and community activities leading up to the match. Fans can expect a mix of cultural celebrations and hockey action at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The festivities begin on March 25 with the Calgary South Asian Business Summit, offering keynote speeches and panel discussions. Two days later, a South Asian Ball Hockey event will take place, organised in partnership with Dampy Brar and the Flames Alumni.
On game day, a new logo designed by Navi Jhaj will be unveiled. The emblem includes a flaming C and intricate details inspired by seven South Asian textile traditions—Phulkari from Punjab, Bandhani from Gujarat, Kantha from Bengal, and others rooted in Mughal, Rajput, and regional craftsmanship. Before the puck drops, DJ Joash Charles will provide music for the pre-game and player warm-up. Seven-year-old Keatan Brar will lead the Flames onto the ice as the TELUS Skater. Fans entering the arena can enjoy dance performances and a dedicated photo station. During intermissions, the South Asian Minor Hockey Shootout and Bhangra dance performances will take centre stage. The game itself will be broadcast nationally on *Hockey Night in Canada* and *Hockey Night in Canada Punjabi*.
The event highlights the Flames' commitment to celebrating South Asian culture within the hockey community. Activities span business, sport, and entertainment, culminating in a nationally televised game. The newly designed logo and performances will remain central to the evening's festivities.
