Calgary battles heavy snowfall as crashes and delays disrupt morning travel

Heavy snowfall has hit Calgary, causing travel disruptions on Thursday morning. The city has activated road crews to manage the difficult conditions, while police warn of hazardous driving on highways north of the area.

The snow began early on Thursday, leading to a challenging commute for many. Between midnight and 8 a.m., RCMP reported 12 crashes, including three that resulted in injuries. Authorities have advised drivers to take extra caution, particularly on highways north of Calgary.

City crews are working in shifts to clear major routes like Crowchild Trail, Glenmore Trail, and Memorial Drive. These teams will continue operating around the clock into April to keep roads passable. Alongside road clearance, workers are also focusing on pedestrian areas, including 12 LRT stations, pathways, and overpasses.

More snow is forecasted throughout the day and into Friday. Handwork teams have been deployed to ensure LRT stations remain accessible despite the ongoing snowfall.

The snowfall has already caused delays and accidents across the city. With additional snow expected, crews will maintain rotating shifts to keep roads and pedestrian routes clear. Drivers are urged to stay alert and adjust their travel plans as conditions remain difficult.
