Calau's Mayor Addresses Controversial Submission Concerning Jews - Calau Mayor Responds to Controversial Anti-Semitic Statement
In the wake of a heated controversy over an anti-Semitic post on a local business' Facebook page, Calau—a town nestled within the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district—has taken a firm stand against discrimination. The town's administration details this in a statement on their official website. In solidarity, the town hall has hung a banner proclaiming "Calau Embraces Diversity." This update follows a previous report by RBB.
The offending post, which appeared on the Facebook page of a clothing shop and dry cleaner operating in both Kleinmachnow and Calau last Sunday, declared that Jews were forbidden from the premises. The post has since been removed. The shop owner, based in Calau, denies the allegations, claiming that their website was hacked. Meanwhile, the police have launched an investigation due to suspicions of hate speech.
Addressing the issue, Calau's mayor, Marco Babenz (independent), stated, "We draw a clear line—against anti-Semitism, against prejudice, and against any form of aggression. Anti-Semitism has no place in our community, right here in Calau. We champion tolerance, respect, and harmonious coexistence. (...)"
