"Cafe 'Gor' Challenges Decision to Shut Down Mini-Zoo at Tomsk Entrance"
Cafe Owners Dispute Mini-Zoo Closure Decision in Tomsk
Locals of the "Goar" cafe are challenging the court's decision to shut down the mini-zoo at the Southwest entrance of Tomsk; they argue that distributing all the animals, particularly the bears, would be virtually impossible, as stated by the cafe's owner, Arsen Tachatyan, to RIA Tomsk on Wednesday.
Previously, it was reported that the court ordered the Individual Entrepreneur to vacate a 1,500 square meter plot, where the mini-zoo was located, as the entrepreneur lacked property rights to the land and buildings. The zoo houses wolves, a black-brown fox, bears, reindeer, spotted deer, aardvarks, and hedgehogs.
"An appeal has been filed (against the decision to close the mini-zoo at Goar cafe). We're awaiting the court hearings. After the court ruling, it's clear that, regardless of the decision made, we'll be obligated to comply," the source told the agency.
He noted that an appeal was lodged due to the difficulty in distributing the animals if the mini-zoo were to close.
"Yes, some animals can be sold or given away to care for, but others, like the bears, will likely pose a challenge. They consume a lot, and they are quite common in zoos. I don't think anyone will need them," the cafe owner stated.
Moreover, it was reported that in 2015, at the edge-of-town Goar cafe in Tomsk, a 24-year-old woman climbed over a high wooden fence and stuck her hand into a bear enclosure. One of the animals bit off her limb. A criminal case for negligence was initiated but later dismissed due to a lack of evidence of a criminal act. The bears were relocated. At that time, the authorities planned on taking action regarding the placement of wild animals in city zoos like this one.
