Cadillac, a division of General Motors, prepares for its inaugural appearance in Formula One racing, scheduled for 2026.
The automotive giant, General Motors (GM), is set to make a significant return to Formula One (F1) racing with the launch of their newly formed team, the Cadillac Formula One team, in the 2026 season[1][2][4].
The team, led by Graeme Lowdon, 60, the team principal of the Cadillac Formula One team[3], has already secured Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas as their drivers for the debut campaign[1][2][5]. In preparation for the upcoming season, the team has been working closely with TWG Motorsports, a partner of GM[6].
In an effort to maintain a high level of expertise within the team, Lowdon has emphasized that engineers should communicate with engineers, and specialists should communicate with specialists[1]. This approach aims to ensure a smooth and efficient workflow within the organisation.
As for the engine, Cadillac will not be relying on external suppliers. Instead, they are preparing to open a dedicated Formula One engine factory in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2026[1]. This move signifies that Cadillac/GM will be producing their own engines for their F1 cars, marking a significant step in their commitment to the sport.
It is worth noting that GM will be the first new Formula One team since 2016[7]. The team's Formula One effort involves facilities in Silverstone, England; Indianapolis; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Warren, Michigan[1].
The entry of the Cadillac Formula One team presents an opportunity for Detroit-based GM to market its vehicles globally, as F1 conducts races globally, with three races annually in Miami, Austin, Texas, and Las Vegas[8]. The expansion of F1's presence in the United States is a testament to the growing interest in the sport in the region.
In an interview earlier this year, Lowdon compared the GM Formula One effort to the U.S. landing men on the moon between 1969 and 1972, highlighting the ambitious nature of the project[9].
GM spokesman Mike Albano has stated that they are not in a position to offer any interviews about the automaker's F1 efforts[10]. Despite this, the team's preparation efforts have been described by Lowdon in a YouTube interview and include simulating the Barcelona Grand Prix race as part of their preparations[11].
The 2026 F1 season will see 11 teams participating, with the Cadillac Formula One team joining as a new American factory team with its own engine program[1][4]. Ferrari will supply engines for the Cadillac team in 2026[1]. With the team's ambitious plans and the star-studded driver line-up, the racing world eagerly awaits the debut of the Cadillac Formula One team in 2026.
