Caddie substitute for PGA playoff event secured by Scheffler for Round 1 competition
Michael Cromie Steps In as Scottie Scheffler's Caddie at the BMW Championship
Michael Cromie, a renowned golf caddie, took on a significant role during the 2025 BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in suburban Baltimore. Cromie, who is usually Chris Kirk's caddie, filled in for Scottie Scheffler's regular caddie, Ted Scott, who had to return home due to a family issue.
In an unexpected turn of events, Scheffler, who has won both the PGA Championship and the Open Championship this year, went on to win the BMW Championship with Cromie as his caddie. This victory earned Cromie a share of the $360,000 prize money.
Cromie's association with golf goes back to his days as a college golfer at the University of Georgia. He was an All-SEC and All-American selection in 2014 and won prestigious amateur tournaments, including the North and South Amateur at Pinehurst. He has also played on famous courses like Augusta National and Cypress Point.
As a caddie, Cromie has made a name for himself, particularly with his work with Chris Kirk. The duo has been together since 2020 and has won two tournaments together - the 2023 Honda Classic and The Sentry in January 2024. Cromie's contributions extend beyond just carrying the bags. He has collaborated with putter manufacturer Odyssey to design a new putter used successfully during playoff events in 2024.
Scheffler, who was third in the previous tournament with Brad Payne as his caddie, praised Cromie's professionalism, preparation, and work ethic. He noted the personal trust factor since Cromie is a good friend of Scheffler's regular caddie, Ted Scott. Cromie's fill-in role at this high-profile event demonstrated his respected status and capability within professional golf caddying.
With this victory, Scheffler has already earned enough points to ensure his berth at the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta, which will take place next week. Scheffler currently leads the season points standings, a position he has held since the start of the season.
