Caddie of Miyu Yamashita identified
In the world of professional golf, moments of triumph and camaraderie are cherished by all. Japanese golfer Miyu Yamashita recently experienced one such moment at the AIG Women's Open, her first major victory on the LPGA Tour.
Miyu Yamashita, who turned professional in 2020, had a strong start to her maiden LPGA Tour season, earning several top-10 finishes. Her success can be attributed in part to her caddie, John Bennett, a seasoned professional from Taranaki, New Zealand, with over two decades of caddying experience.
John Bennett began his career at the turn of the century, working for his long-time friend, David Smail, a New Zealand professional golfer. Together, they won seven of Smail's career titles, including the 2001 New Zealand Open. After eight years with Smail, Bennett ventured into the Japanese golf scene, working with Sakura Yokomine and Ayaka Matsumori.
With Bennett by her side, Matsumori achieved victory at the 2016 Fujitsu Ladies. After Yokomine's switch, Bennett worked with Miyu Yamashita, joining her team in 2025. Their partnership proved fruitful, as Yamashita earned her LPGA Tour card via Q-Series following her most recent victory, the Daio Paper Elleair Ladies Open.
The AIG Women's Open marked a significant moment for both Bennett and Yamashita. After a strong performance in the second round, Yamashita held a three-shot lead, putting her in pole position to go even better at the final Major of the year. And she did, securing her first major and LPGA victory, a moment shared with Bennett that they will undoubtedly remember.
Yamashita credits Bennett for his support and the trust they share. "I rely on John and feel reassured with our relationship," she said. Bennett's extensive experience and dedication have undoubtedly played a role in Yamashita's success.
As Yamashita continues to make her mark on the LPGA Tour, it's clear that her partnership with Bennett will be a key factor in her journey. With 13 tournaments won on the LPGA of Japan Tour by the end of 2024 and a major victory under her belt, Yamashita is poised for even greater success in the future.
Miyu Yamashita and John Bennett, her seasoned caddie, shared a moment of triumph at the AIG Women's Open, a significant event in their partnership that led to Yamashita's first major victory on the LPGA Tour. Even beyond golf, their rapport was evident as Yamashita credited Bennett for his support, stating, "I rely on John and feel reassured with our relationship."
