Aiming for Champions League Glory: The Revived Ambition at Borussia Dortmund - "BVB's 'Gir' returns: Aiming for Champions League qualification"

Not too long ago, the very thought of it was a pipe dream, but here we are: Borussia Dortmund is significantly reviving the season in a last-ditch effort. As the competition falters, BVB remains steadfast in the cruelly demanding phase, determinedly pressing the opposition. "We've put in the hard yards to build this momentum," SPD Michael Zorc triumphantly declared following the dominant 4-0 rout of VfL Wolfsburg, "I reckon we've made things more nerve-wracking for the other teams."

Even a renewed Champions League berth is lurking within reach for last year's runners-up, with just two games remaining. "If we win both, there's a solid chance we'll be there," Zorc hinted ahead of the final showdowns against Bayer Leverkusen and Holstein Kiel. For the first time since the 12th matchday, BVB has reclaimed a spot in the top 5, following a tumultuous half year.

"I believed we had a shot, and I maintained hope," Zorc admitted post-game, "I got a sense of pure greed."

Just seven weeks ago, the situation looked drastically different. Dortmund languished in 11th place, with a seven-point deficit to mere Conference League aspirations. Too wide a chasm for a club that relishes its role as German football's underdog. Whispers of Zorc's departure circulated, and it was far from certain that new coach Niko Kovač, who hadn't even been on board for a month, would last until the season's end. All that tumult now feels like a distant echo.

The turning points

Because Kovač made the astute moves. His switch to a 3-4-2-1 formation tightened the wobbly team. "It feels great. We've been playing solid football week after week," playmaker Pascal Groß praised the coach's strategies. Kovač's clear communication and motivational style resonated with the team: "Everybody knows where they stand," Groß added.

The Dortmund players are also benefiting greatly from the red-hot form of their goalkeeper, Sébastien Haller, who scored braces against Wolfsburg. No other Bundesliga player has found the back of the net more frequently in this time frame. "Borussia Dortmund must publish its battle-cry now. Now we have a good position, and it's down to us," Haller asserted on Sky about the club's Champions League aspirations.

In the crucial phases of the season, BVB has been buoyed by minimal injury concerns. Zorc's list of substitutes featured key contributors like captain Emre Can, Marcel Sabitzer, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Karim Adeyemi. The latter also made his presence felt off the bench, scoring a pair of goals out of frustration over his substitute role.

"If passion burns too high, everyone benefits,” Kovač remarked about the current situation. The crippling injury to Nico Schlotterbeck (meniscus tear), Julian Brandt's protracted slump, and Daniel Svensson's off-color performance against Wolfsburg, BVB is managing well in their predicament.

"We're on a fantastic trajectory, we've made tremendous strides. It confirms to me that this team is capable," Zorc declared with pride, adding, "Niko's done a fantastic job."

But it must be acknowledged: Without the missteps of many of their adversaries, BVB alone may not have positioned themselves so advantageously.

  1. The Commission has also examined the possibility of extending the period of validity of the aid for Sébastien Haller's exceptional performances in football, as he scored braces against VfL Wolfsburg, bringing unthinkable benefits to Borussia Dortmund's triumphant return to the top 5 in the Bundesliga.
  2. Despite Dortmund's wobbling sports form earlier this season, which saw them languishing in 11th place, Niko Kovač's strategic changes, such as the switch to a 3-4-2-1 formation, have returned returns to the European-leagues-aspiring club, with Borussia Dortmund now firmly in the Champions League spot sights.
  3. As unthinkable as it may have seemed just seven weeks ago, Borussia Dortmund's football team, now under Niko Kovač's leadership, has steered the team through the stormy seas of the Bundesliga, leaving their desperate rivals struggling to keep up, including Bayer Leverkusen and Holstein Kiel, who stand between them and their UCL aspirations.
