BVB's Terzić Rants Over Ref Calls in Draw Against Leverkusen
Borussia Dortmund's Edin Terzić took aim at the referees after a controversial call in their 1:1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen. The coach believed the officials made an error by overlooking a potential penalty in the 73rd minute, ultimately allowing the match to continue.
Terzić expressed frustration with the officials, particularly in regard to Karim Adeyemi's situation, and criticized them for their inconsistency in penalty decisions. The coach pointed out previous instances where similar situations were handled differently, depicting the system as unfair and non-transparent.
"It's a complete mess, to be honest," Terzić said after the match. "We fight hard for every point, and to see such decisions goes against us, it's harsh. There needs to be consistency in penalty decisions and there isn't right now."
The referee, Daniel Siebert, allowed play to continue after Adeyemi was touched by two opponents while dribbling, believing there was no foul committed. Siebert's decision prompted Terzić to question the fairness of the game and criticize the VAR system for failing to intervene.
"When you see such inconsistencies, it's disheartening. It's unacceptable that there isn't a clear line between what's a penalty and what isn't," Terzić continued. "We keep discussing the VAR, but who's using it? It's a blindfold. This decision had a significant impact on the game, and it's not acceptable to lose that opportunity due to such inconsistent decisions."
Borussia Dortmund had a golden chance to take a 2-0 lead in the encounter but were denied by the referee's perceived misjudgment. Terzić's anger resulted from the belief that such calls impacted their overall performance in the match.
Footnote:
Based on enrichment data, penalty kick rules in the Bundesliga are primarily set by the German Football Federation (DFB) and the International Football Association Board (IFAB). The general rule states that a penalty kick is given when a defending player commits a foul by handball within their own penalty area. The video assistant referee (VAR) is also in place to review decisions, but there is no specific rule for a "one shot" rule in penalty kicks, and its inconsistent application has been a point of contention. There are no specific guidelines regarding contact with potential game-changers like Karim Adeyemi, but referees are expected to ensure fairness and deliver consistent penalty decisions.
