A Tussle for the Club World Cup: BVB vs RB in the 2025 USA Tournament

The Champions League's knockout phase in 2025 holds more than just pride for Borussia Dortmund (BVB) and RB Leipzig. Qualification for the highly anticipated Club World Cup, slated to debut in the USA the following summer, is also up for grabs. With only one extra German team aside from football titan FC Bayern Munich expected to participate, BVB maintains the advantage in the race.

Currently, BVB leads the qualification rankings, holding 67 points. Leipzig follows closely behind with 61, positioning themselves ahead of FC Barcelona (55) but trailing Atlético Madrid (62). The catch is that only two teams from each country can secure their spots via ranking. Bayern has already clinched theirs with an impressive 100 points.

The competition features prominent football giants like Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, FC Porto, Benfica Lisbon, and the Champions League champions from the past three years: Chelsea FC, Real Madrid, and Manchester City. Additionally, Germany holds four remaining spots for the intercontinental competition – one for the 2024 Champions League winners and the remaining three via ranking.

BVB holds a strong position

Players bag two points for every round-of-16 win, one point for a draw, and another for progressing to the subsequent round. In total, 17 points are still in contention before the tournament's closing match at Wembley on June 1, 2025.

Suppose Dortmund suffers losses in their upcoming matches against PSV Eindhoven and Leipzig triumphs with victories against Real Madrid and one subsequent quarter-final. In that scenario, Leipzig could potentially eliminate the six-point gap and rival Dortmund for the top spot. A challenging yet achievable task for Leipzig.

Despite Roberto Carlos' positive outlook on their squad, Leipzig coach Marco Rose has expressed reservations regarding the Club World Cup and its impact on player health. "Anything extra is not justified in terms of player health, I personally believe. And yet, we'll carry on, turn the wheel, turn the screw. We know that our business is predominantly driven by money. Not to sound delightful, but we have no choice but to comply," Rose stated[1].

Insights from Europe's Union of Football Associations (UEFA) Ranking

The UEFA 5-year club ranking for 2025, which considers factors like the performance of one's national league, UEFA Champions League, and UEFA Cup participation, plays a significant role in determining the German teams that will compete in the Club World Cup.

In this ranking, which includes Bayern Munich as the best-rated team (128.750 points), Dortmund comes in second position with 98.750 points[2]. Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt follow toward the bottom of the rankings, with 95.250 and 68.000 points respectively[2].

The Club World Cup 2025 – A Look into Its Appeal and Criticism

Organized by FIFA, the Club World Cup intends to unite the championship winners from various continents, culminating in a thrilling and prestigious football tournament. Set to take place from June 15 to July 13, 2025, the competition will witness 63 matches across the USA. Each team will participate in at least three group matches and up to seven games, including the final.

Initially criticized for the heavy workload imposed on professionals and the abbreviated summer break before the World Cup season, opponents of the Club World Cup have begun expressing their concerns. However, the top clubs, influenced by association ECA and motivated by marketing opportunities, stand firm in their participation.

Regardless of criticism, the tournament is destined to be a significant event in the soccer world, where international teams will clash in a battle for supremacy on the field.
