Borussia Dortmund clinched the Club World Cup group stage and a ticket to the Round of 16, earning an additional €10 million due to their win against Ulsan HD. In a scorching 35-degree heat, the Westphalian powerhouse edged out their South Korean opponents 1-0, thanks to a 36th-minute goal from Daniel Svensson. Coach Niko Kovac expressed satisfaction, stating, "We aimed to progress through the group and reach the Round of 16, and we've achieved that."
In the parallel match, Mamelodi Sundowns and Fluminense Rio de Janeiro drew 0-0, benefiting Dortmund's advancement. The Dortmund squad will continue their journey in Atlanta on the subsequent Tuesday, with the game commencing at 3:00 AM German time.
BVB's success in the match award them nearly €10 million across two sources. They received approximately €2 million for the win itself, and €7.5 million for progressing to the Round of 16, boosting their overall tournament earnings to around €40 million, including appearance fees.1
High-profile spectators included US Vice President JD Vance and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The intense security measures implemented for the match were reflective of the caliber of the guests present.
The Westphalian team dominated the match in possession and chances, but lacked intensity and relentless attack, appearing somewhat complacent. Only the new signing, Jobe Bellingham, stood out, showcasing notable presence.
The lone goal came from a combination of Bellingham and Svensson, with Bellingham setting up the winning strike. The second half saw little change, with Dortmund maintaining control and creating numerous opportunities, but failing to capitalize. Ulsan did register shots on target, but BVB never appeared in real danger.
Following the match, Dortmund flew immediately back to Florida for training in Fort Lauderdale, preparing for their upcoming knockout round clash.
