Buttigieg emerged as Harris' preferred choice for a 2024 running mate, but the partnership was deemed too hazardous
In her upcoming memoir, "107 Days", Vice President Kamala Harris has revealed that Pete Buttigieg was her first choice for a running mate in the 2024 presidential election. However, she ultimately decided against it due to concerns about how voters would react to two barrier-breaking candidates.
Harris picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate instead, following his attack line against former President Trump and his running mate, then-Ohio Sen. JD Vance. This decision came as potential 2028 contenders began traveling the U.S. in the early days of the second Trump administration.
Pete Buttigieg, who emerged as a national political figure during his 2020 presidential run and finished atop the Iowa caucuses, was considered an ideal partner by Harris. She stated in her book that pairing with Buttigieg, a gay man, was too risky due to concerns about voter reactions.
Harris expressed regret at not choosing Buttigieg as her running mate, stating it was too big of a risk given the stakes. She wrote about her love of working with Buttigieg and her friendship with him and his husband in her memoir.
It's unclear when Harris decided against Buttigieg as her running mate. After Biden dropped out of the presidential race in July 2024, Harris was left to head up the Democratic ticket. Harris' book, set to be published by Simon & Schuster on Tuesday, also criticizes former President Biden's late exit from the 2024 campaign, stating it was reckless.
In a separate part of her memoir, Harris criticizes the U.S. system, stating it is "broken". This is Harris' first interview out of office, where she tells Colbert that the U.S. system is in need of repair. Harris' book, "107 Days", will provide insight into her thoughts on selecting a running mate and her experiences during the 2024 presidential campaign.
Harris and Buttigieg have not made any public comments regarding their relationship since the 2024 campaign. The release of Harris' memoir comes as potential 2028 contenders begin traveling the U.S., setting the stage for the next political battle.
