Labor Minister Pushing for Better Delivery Worker Conditions During Peak Season

Germany's Labor Minister, Hubertus Heil from the SPD party, is determined to enhance the working conditions of delivery workers in the bustling postal and parcel sector during the holiday season. A visit to DHL's largest parcel center in Ludwigsfelde, Brandenburg, showcased Heil's concern for the staff as they deal with the annual surge in operations.

With over 650 workers from 70 nations, DHL Ludwigsfelde processes an impressive 650,000 parcels daily, necessitating additional employment with 10,000 new hires across Germany announced by DHL Group CEO Tobias Meyer to combat peak season pressure.

In response to complaints concerning tardy deliveries and misplaced parcels, Minister Heil encouraged empathy towards the dedicated delivery workers who work tirelessly regardless of the harsh weather to meet customer demands. Emphasizing their vital role in the enjoyable shopping journey, Heil noted, "In our digital age, it's these dedicated workers who bring magic to our lives."

To champion healthier working conditions, Heil proposed the imposition of labels on heavy parcels weighing over 10 kilos. This initiative will provide carriers with accurate information to avoid overburdening employees and lower the risk of back injuries. Moreover, this change aligns with demands from the trade union Verdi.

Heil also hinted at stricter regulations for companies disregarding occupational health and safety considerations, causing potential loss of parcel delivery licenses. For instance, larger consignments should not be expected to be carried by a single person to upper levels.
