Bayern Munich's Resurgence Under Vincent Kompany

The new season for FC Bayern Munich has begun, and the club is off to a strong start under the guidance of their new coach, Vincent Kompany. The Belgian defender, who joined Bayern as a player in 2021, has taken the reigns and transformed the team from old to new.

Kompany's impact on the team is evident, with key players like Serge Gnabry and Dayot Upamecano flourishing under his mentorship. Gnabry, in particular, has a strong record against English clubs, including scoring twice against Chelsea in the 2019 Champions League round of 16 first leg. Upamecano, on the other hand, has been playing more stably and reliably, forming a strong defensive partnership with Jonathan Tah.

The current sporting director of FC Bayern Munich, Max Eberl, believes that Kompany has revitalized some of the Bayern Munich players, specifically naming Gnabry. Eberl led the club to the Round of 16 in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League, but it is unclear whether he is definitively the one responsible for the sporting management role, as other names like Christoph Freund and Jan-Christian Dreesen are mentioned in context of leadership duties at Bayern Munich.

Kompany's influence extends beyond the players he has personally mentored. Leon Goretzka and the departed wingers Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sané are also potential beneficiaries of Kompany's management.

One of Kompany's most notable decisions was convincing the Bayern Munich bosses not to field Matthijs de Ligt in the starting lineup, as Tuchel had done, but to opt for Upamecano instead. This decision paid off, as Bayern went on to win the Champions League return leg against FC Chelsea 4-1, after winning the first leg 3-0. The win set the foundation for Bayern's Champions League triumph under coach Hansi Flick in the Final Eight tournament in Lisbon.

Kompany aims to go further in Europe than the round of 16, unlike in the 2024/25 season. With a strong starting lineup and a coach who knows his players personally, it seems that Bayern Munich is well on their way to achieving their goals.

Upamecano's contract with Bayern Munich expires in 2026, and the club is working on a contract extension with him. With Kompany at the helm, it seems that Bayern Munich is in good hands for years to come.
