Business mogul Elon Musk reports to abandon plans for a new political party, focusing instead on his business ventures.

Elon Musk's proposed political party, the America Party, has been temporarily halted as of August 2025. The move comes after Musk expressed concerns about starting a political party that could siphon voters from the Republican Party, a concern shared by Vice President JD Vance, who is seen as a key figure in the MAGA movement and a likely 2028 presidential candidate [1][3][4].

Musk announced the America Party on July 6, aiming to attract voters disillusioned with the two major parties. However, the plan has been put on hold to prioritise Musk's business interests and to avoid splitting the Republican voter base ahead of the 2026 midterm elections [1][2][3][4].

The America Party was intended to provide freedom to the people, a sentiment Musk expressed to his followers on June 6, announcing, "the people have spoken. A new political party is needed in America to represent the 80% in the middle!" [6]. This sentiment was echoed in a poll conducted on July 4, where 65.4% of respondents voted in favour of creating the America Party [7].

Musk's relationship with President Donald Trump has been strained since his departure from the White House. The fallout began after Musk criticised Trump’s tax-and-spending bill, opposed rollbacks on electric vehicle subsidies, and posted critical comments online [2][3]. This led to Trump threatening to withdraw federal subsidies for Musk’s companies, though Trump later softened his stance [2].

Despite the fallout, Musk has sought to maintain ties with Vance and appears to be trying to repair his relationship with Trump to some extent, demonstrated by his $15 million donation to the GOP and public support of some of Trump’s policies like the National Guard deployment in Washington, D.C. [2]. However, Musk's focus remains on preserving influence within the Republican Party rather than forming a new political party that could damage his relationships with its prominent members [1][2][3][4].

Musk's criticism of the legislation included posts on his social media platform, X, and led to a public feud with Trump [8][9]. On July 6, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he believes Musk is going off the rails and becoming a train wreck [10]. In response, Musk announced the formation of the America Party, stating, "I want to see America thrive, and that requires a political party that truly represents the people" [11].

The Wall Street Journal reported that Musk has maintained ties with Vice President JD Vance, considered the heir apparent to the MAGA movement [12]. Despite this, Musk's opposition to the legislation was based on the amount of spending he found objectionable, a stance that may have contributed to the decision to temporarily halt the America Party [13].

A spokesperson for Musk did not respond to a request for comment.
