Bus tragedy strike in Ore Mountains: Fatality of child and multiple injuries reported
In a harrowing bus accident that occurred in the snow-laden Ore Mountains on a chilly Tuesday morning, tragedy struck as a 10-year-old boy lost his life. The driver of the public bus and a passenger, both 45 and 59 years of age respectively, suffered severe injuries. A 10-year-old girl survived with minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for observation. Ten additional passengers, ranging from 11 to 39 years of age, were treated for minor injuries and discharged after receiving medical attention.
The bus skidded off-course, colliding with a winter service vehicle on one side before careening head-on into a tree. The impact was so ferocious that the front two meters of the vehicle were obliterated. According to the initial police investigation, the road was slippery due to the prevailing weather conditions at the time of the accident.
The children attending the high school, as revealed by the Ministry of Education, were among the victims. To respect the privacy of the students and their families, further details were withheld. The uninjured students were offered psychological support at a daycare center, with the State Office for School and Education currently evaluating any additional aid required.
Saxon Minister of Education, Christian Piwarz (CDU), expressed his shock and condolences. "This heart-rending news has left a deep impact on me," he conveyed to the German Press Agency on Tuesday. "My thoughts are with the injured children and their parents. We will extend all necessary support to the affected school and students in this dire situation."
The bus and the winter service vehicle collided on Sehmatal, resulting in a head-on collision with a tree. The police estimated the damage to be approximately 100,000 euros. The cause of the accident remains unclear as the investigating unit is still probing the incident.
Rainfall in the morning on Tuesday led to the formation of black ice on numerous roads across the highlands of Saxony. Florian Engelmann from the German Weather Service explained, "The precipitation was transformed from snow to rain by a warm air layer at about 1,500 meters. If the rain then falls on cleared, exposed roads that are mainly in the highlands and have a temperature below zero, it becomes extremely slippery."
In mountainous regions like the Ore Mountains, the risk of black ice formation is heightened due to temperature fluctuations, persistent moisture, shady road sections, prevalence of bridges and overpasses exposed to cold air, and inadequate road drainage. These factors combined contribute to the formation of black ice, making it especially treacherous for drivers navigating such environments.
