Burien Shelter Urgently Needs Donations as Winter Weather Nears

The Burien Severe Weather Shelter and Day Center is calling for urgent donations as winter approaches. With colder and wetter conditions increasing demand, the facility is running low on essential supplies like warm clothing and food. The centre has been a vital resource for the community since opening in December 2023.

The shelter first launched in late 2023, operating during severe weather from November to March. Hours vary depending on conditions, but the Day Center remains open every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In 2025, services expanded to include extreme heat and smoke events, with 17 activations recorded in July and August alone.

Case managers from three local organisations regularly visit the site to connect guests with additional support. So far, the shelter has helped house 10 people through DESC’s Bloomside Permanent Supportive Housing programme. On average, 15 guests receive a hot lunch daily, while 6 to 8 people use the shower facilities.

Now, as temperatures drop, the shelter is facing shortages of men’s coats, sweatshirts, socks, underwear, sweatpants, and gloves. Financial contributions are also needed to cover operating costs, including towel laundering, food, utilities, and cleaning supplies.

Donations can be dropped off at the Day Center or at Highline United Methodist Church on Sundays—no sign-up required. Monetary gifts are accepted via PayPal or by cheque, payable to Highline UMC with 'shelter' noted in the memo line.

The shelter continues to serve as a critical refuge during harsh weather, offering food, warmth, and housing support. With rising demand, contributions of clothing, funds, and supplies will help maintain these essential services for the community.
