Burgenland firefighters battle storms in relentless Christmas night rescues

Firefighters in Burgenland faced a relentless Christmas night as storms, heavy snow, and icy roads kept crews busy across the region. Emergency services worked non-stop, responding to fallen trees, stranded vehicles, and structural risks while many celebrated the holiday indoors.

The Goberling Volunteer Fire Brigade in Stadtschlaining alone handled 12 callouts within 24 hours. Nearby, the Oberpullendorf Fire Brigade dealt with four separate emergencies in a single day. Other departments across Burgenland also reported high activity on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

In Unterkohlstätten and Kaisersdorf, teams cleared fallen trees and pulled stranded vehicles from snowdrifts. A car in Neustift an der Rosalia slid into a roadside ditch, requiring recovery. The Wiesen Fire Brigade also assisted with a vehicle stuck in hazardous conditions. The storm forced the temporary closure of the road to Glashütten due to debris and ice. In Burgauberg-Burgau, a tree collapsed onto a house roof, while in Neudörfl, heavy snow threatened to cave in a warehouse roof.

Despite the holiday, Burgenland’s fire services remained fully operational, proving their readiness year-round. Crews continue to monitor weather-related risks as recovery efforts carry on across the region.
