Former Thuringia governor Bodo Ramelow has called for an immediate selection of a Federal Chancellor, lambasting Merz and Klingbeil for their failures. "Merz and Klingbeil flubbed it - they're accountable for the ensuing chaos," the Left Party representative snarled to German Press Agency in Erfurt. "I'm seething about the coalition."

CDU leader Friedrich Merz stumbled in the Bundesgart's initial Chancellor vote. He garnered 310 of the 621 ballots cast, falling short of the necessary 316-vote majority. The coalition factions CDU/CSU and SPD collectively hold 328 parliamentary seats.

Ramelow, now a sitting member of the Bundestag, stated that the Left would maintain political and substantive opposition to Merz. However, he emphasized, "The Bundestag must now promptly elect a Chancellor - that's the responsibility of democratic parties." He expressed disappointment that Merz wasn't elected by his own coalition in the opening round. "This mess just helps the AfD, who wish to demolish democracy," he warned ominously.
