Linesman injured: Role swap in Bundesliga match - Bundesliga referee's calf injury forces mid-match officiating shuffle

A Bundesliga match between FC St. Pauli and Eintracht Frankfurt took an unexpected turn when assistant referee Christian Dietz suffered a calf injury. The incident forced an immediate change in officiating duties during the first half.

Dietz went down early in the game, unable to carry on. He remained on the pitch but moved to stand between the two dugouts until halftime. His role had to be covered quickly to avoid further disruption.

Fourth official Eric Weisbach stepped in to replace Dietz as assistant referee for the rest of the first half. When the teams returned after the break, a DFB referee observer took over the position. The observer's identity and experience in similar situations remain unclear, as no records confirm how many Bundesliga matches they have officiated as a substitute.

The match continued without further delays, though Dietz's injury required two separate replacements. Weisbach handled the first half, while the DFB observer completed the second. The incident highlights the need for quick adaptations in officiating during live matches.
